Club of the Year

The John Allen Perpetual Cup is an award, which has been made possible through the generosity of John Allen. John started in Judo while a student of the Regional Technical College (RTC) Galway. He was coached by John Creaven who was the College Coach from 1979, when the Judo Club started. John Allen made rapid progress winning Provincial events, College events and also achieved his 1st Dan. While studying Accounting in the RTC he started the Oranmore Judo Club for children from the area where he lived. Subsequently John emigrated to Canada where he has lived for the past 20 years. His frequent visits home are always punctuated by a visit to Creaven House where he watches the training of the young players. This inspired John to make a generous donation to the Galway Judo Club and this generosity is manifested by putting up a cup. The John Allen Perpetual Cup is awarded to the club which does the most to promote Judo in Ireland. So the award was not for the club with the most Black Belts or the most medals, but for the club that spreads the message of Judo, helps newer clubs, organises events and supports the objectives of Judo Ireland.
