John Creaven has been doing Judo since 1967. A life-long member of Galway Judo Club, where he is also Chairperson and Chief Instructor, he has been instrumental in virtually developing Judo both in Galway and elsewhere.
He studied Judo in the famous Budokwai Club in London, under Syd Hoare and also spent several summers in Holland at the Popendal Summer School, where he learned under the best European and Japanese coaches. He brought all that experience back to Galway and taught at several clubs in the city. He also founded a number of clubs and taught judo both in GMIT and NUIG for several years.
John also started the Galway Open Tournament in 1975 and the West of Ireland Youth Championships in 2004. He has organised numerous coaching conferences for coaches and has in the past brought in outside experts in particular areas to broaden coaches’ knowledge.
John was the driving force behind the Galway Judo Club getting a permanent, purpose-built Dojo in the city centre. He along with others in Judo Ireland and outside, have plans in place for a National Dojo.
